A new platform for apprenticeships

The Challenge

Launched at the height of the credit crunch, this UK government initiative to encourage more young people into apprenticeships attracted widespread media and public interest. As well as a national advertising campaign, it require a complete technical platform that would allow visitors to access the right information quickly. Given the national coverage, there was no room for delays or technical problems.

As with any project on this scale, there were many stakeholders involved – from politicians, to the Learning and Skills Council, to external suppliers such as Capgemini. Each had their own needs and expectations which required extensive consideration. The scale of the challenge was increased by the need to comply with the exacting usability and technical standards required for government websites.

Our Solution

Starting with these high technical standards, Digital Potion sought to bring technical best practice to every aspect of the site, both front and back end. We carefully selected key systems, using Site Core as our chosen content management system, and successfully managed the implementation through to the website’s final release and launch. We were also tasted with providing the hosting infrastructure, which demanded a thorough assessment of requirements and the creation of a powerful, dependable disaster recovery hosting environment.

The Outcome

Our co-ordination and communication skills proved crucial in navigating the complexities of a multi-faceted project that involved a broad range of technical and non-technical stakeholders. The solutions and systems we put in place for Apprenticeships have proved their worth many times over. The digital platform was launched in 2009, with new features and functionality added year-on-year. Our contribution shaped the overall technical approach to the project, in terms of technology and systems selection and coding standards used. Our expertise not only ensured a successful launch for this high-profile initiative, it has also underpinned the seamless growth and development of the site in the years since, demonstrating our ability to deliver future-proof solutions.
